Kelvin Scott, violin maker from U.S.A., received the Gold Medal for his viola at the 16th VSA INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION -PORTLAND - Nov. 2004.
332 instruments were entered in the competition,in the instrument category there were 8 Gold Medals.
For making this viola Mr. K.Scott has used the spruce from Fiemme valley. He wants to express his personal judgement on this tonewood.
" Ciresa stands out in my mind as one of Europe's premier tonewood cutters for violin-family instruments. The Ciresa family's long participation in the tonewood trade has cultivated a deep expertise and appreciation for the subtleties that differentiate good tonewood from truly excellent tonewood.
I have been thoroughly pleased with the wood I have purchased from Ciresa and I have appreciated their careful grading of billets and the patience in seasoning the spruce.
This tonewood is exceptionally strong and incredibly light and the instruments I have made from Ciresa's spruce have in common a quickness of response and a strength of resonance .
I believe it was these very characteristics that helped contribute to my crafting an instrument that received a Gold medal at the 16th VSA International violinmaking competition.
